The IBE (International Building Exhibition) guidelines for Schönebeck (Elbe) take as their theme the layout of the town as derived from its historical context. The ground plan of the town consists of three core settlements connected by three straight roads, called Kolonistenstraßen, which were laid out in accordance with a plan and are characterised by a parcel structure. King Friedrich II had these roads laid out in about 1770; they were meant to give the impression that the town was larger than it really was. This layout is still evident in the ground plan of the town and is tangible in its structure. Indeed, the different characters of the individual settlements and the urban style of the connecting roads (Kolonistenstraßen) can be regarded as a distinctive feature of Schönebeck (Elbe). Core settlements
The specific characteristics of the three core settlements of the town, Frohse, Altstadt and Bad Salzelmen, are being strengthened through the further development and/or stabilisation of their architectural features. They are clearly evident in the ground plan of the town and are being given an unambiguous image as separate areas, thus helping to reinforce their identity. Kolonistenstraßen
The parcel structure of the three roads known as Kolonistenstraßen is to be preserved or restored. The roads themselves are to be designed in typical local style, so as to emphasize their quality as special connecting roads between the various parts of the town. Whilst Wilhelm-Hellge-Straße, thanks to its architectural and spatial setting, already has a quality that is largely in keeping with the IBE theme, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße suffers particularly from the lack of greenery, ramshackle buildings and a high vacancy rate. A combination of various measures is planned to give structure to the street and improve its appearance. Landscape areas
In the current IBE project we are seeking strategies to improve the surrounding landscape. The different landscape zones help to accentuate the characters of the urban core settlements. It is intended that in future the appearance of the town should be characterised by the direct and abrupt proximity of rural and urban structures. New landscapes are to come into being on land that is currently unused or awaiting clearance and on newly structured areas with allotments bordering on the open countryside.
