salt_pannerstower
The Salt Panners? Tower (Pfännerturm)

This tower, which was built in 1470, originally flanked the Alt Salzer or Elmener Gate in the town wall of Groß Salze.

It also served as a prison tower.

The adjoining gate house was demolished in 1961.

St.Gertrudes_CemeterySt. Gertrude?s Cemetery (Gertraudenfriedhof)

St. Gertrude?s cemetery with its old trees has served since ancient times as a burial place for the inhabitants of Groß Salze and Alt Salze and is also the location of the principal church, the Church of St. Gertrude.

Today, the park-like former cemetery is fascinating on account of the memorial slabs from the tombs of members of the salt panners? guild (known as ?Pfänner?), which have been integrated into the eastern and southern walls.

spa_drinking_fountainThe Spa Drinking Fountain

This spa drinking fountain was built in 1926 and expanded in 1927.

At that time the PREUSSAG company owned the saline spa.

Its use was changed after 1947, but now it is again possible to drink this brine with a salt content of 1.0% free of charge.

the_brine_evaporation_worksThe Brine Evaporation Works

The brine evaporation works was constructed by the Prussian state after plans drawn up by Bergoberhauptmann Waitz Freiherr von Eschen between 1756 and 1765.

It was originally 1323 m in length and served to increase the salt concentration in brine through natural evaporation.
In the years 1774 - 1777 it was extended to 1837 m.

This technical structure lost its economic significance in 1890, when the spraying method started to be used underground after completion of the saline shaft.

After that it served exclusively as an open-air inhalation facility.

The 38 m long adjoining building known as the ?Inhalatorium? has been in existence since 1999. In the year 2013 the building has been the length of 300,4 m.

As part of a guided tour run by the Kunsthof in Bad Salzelmen, it is also possible to climb up the brine evaporation works.
