Within the framework of statutory provisions, the town council is responsible for all matters concerning the town of Schönebeck (Elbe), insofar as the Mayor is not responsible by operation of law or certain matters have been transferred to him by the town council. The council oversees the implementation of its decisions and in the event of wrongs arising in the municipal administration it ensures that these are remedied by the Mayor. The town council makes decisions in agreement with the Mayor concerning the nomination, appointment and dismissal of local authority staff, insofar as the authority to make such decisions has not been transferred to the Mayor by means of the main statutes or the decision falls into the category of routine administration. Councillors have the right to submit queries to the Mayor regarding individual matters of concern to the community.
